What Is VoIP?

Very simply put, VoIP is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over the Internet and they are far cheaper than normal telephone calls. It’s a leading edge technology that transforms your Internet service into a phone line service using a special adaptor. It works virtually the same way as your phone service does with your local telephone company, has a wide selection of local features and can be used with a standard phone set. VoIP does not require any computer to make/receive phone calls.

You could get a new telephone number, even in a place far from where you live. For example, you could obtain a New York number, even if you're living in Australia; this would allow people in New York to call you while paying only for the cost of a local call. Similarly, your number remains the same wherever you go, so you could head overseas with a "local" number back home, and family and friends could continue to call you at local telephone rates. As a customer you are not limited to the local area code of the place you live any more. You can select any other area code that is within our service area. For example, you could live in Ottawa and select a Montreal phone number (514 area code). This means that all your calls to Montreal as well as all calls to you from Montreal will be considered local (not long distance).

Note: the most economical way to call friends and family is to have gateway-to-gateway, i.e. one Voice Adapter installed in your residence and another one at the destination.

What do you need to use VoIP?

The first thing you need is an Internet connection. It can be as basic as dial-up service, and a separate piece of hardware known as an Analog Telephone Adapter or Voice Adapter, which is installed between your home phone and the internet.

Can I surf the web during VoIP calls?
Yes, VoIP allows web surfing while making and receiving VoIP calls simultaneously. It shares the bandwidth connection with other LAN computers and prioritizes voice.

Can I use VoIP for all the phones in my residence?
Definitely, VoIP can replace every single phone in your residence. Voice Adapters can be used instead of regular analog phones.

Can VoIP make and receive calls to/from PSTN lines?
Absolutely! VoIP users can definitely make and receive calls to/from PSTN lines. Any type of calls (e.g. local, long distance, international, etc.) is allowed.

Do I need to know a lot about computers to use this service?
No. Our VoIP service is very easy to install and you will use the same phone set you would normally use with your local telephone company.

Can I keep the service if I move?
Yes, you can keep your service and your phone number. You just need to have an Internet connection at your new location.

Can I keep the service if I travel?
Yes, in most of the cases you can keep your service and your phone number when you travel, domestically or abroad. Just plug your Voice Adapter into an Internet connection at your new location – and you are ready to go. All your calls will be treated the same way as if made using it at your home. For example, if you travel from Toronto to Hong Kong, you can take your service with you, plug into the Internet there, and make calls as if you were still in Toronto (i.e. people could still reach you at your 416 # or you can call their 416 # and neither party would be charged long distance).

How much does it cost to make international calls?
We offer very competitive rates for the international calls that you make from your VoIP phone, choose the country from the list below to see the rate per minute:
